Your go-to guide to Chicago’s Millennium Park

Sure, New York City’s Central Park gets the lion’s share of attention when it comes to impressive, sprawling urban parks. But Chicago’s Grant Park is just as special in its own way. With the incredible view of the downtown skyline and as home to the Art Institute of Chicago, the 320-acre Grant Park, often referred to as Chicago’s front lawn, has plenty to offer.

Tucked in Grant Park’s northwest corner, the 25-acre Millennium Park is one of the city’s most popular attractions for locals and tourists alike, and contains some of the city’s most recognizable landmarks (skyscrapers aside).

Cross the gorgeous, snaking BP pedestrian bridge by foot or bicycle to get an up-close look at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. Designed by legendary architect Frank Gehry, the breathtaking bandshell is home to the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra and Chorus as well as the Grant Park Music Festival, a free classical music series. With the dramatic Chicago skyline as its backdrop, the pavilion is the perfect outdoor venue for all genres of music, and is itself a work of art.

Enjoy the perennials, shrubs, bulbs and trees at the 2.5-acre Lurie Garden, which can be found at the south end of Millennium Park. The contrast between blossoming flora and towering skyscrapers only serves to remind visitors of just what a special place they’re in.

No visit to Millennium Park is complete without checking out the iconic Cloud Gate sculpture. The 110-ton, 33-foot tall work of art by Indian-born British artist Anish Kapoor is difficult to describe — a massive reflective metallic jelly bean, perhaps? — and is one of the city’s most photographed monuments.

While perhaps not as iconic as Cloud Gate, the Crown Fountain installation is equally compelling. The public art/video sculpture, designed by Catalan artist Jaume Plensa, features a black granite reflecting pool between two 50-foot glass towers which feature LEDs to digitally show faces on the inside surfaces of the towers. It’s ridiculously cool.
