Hotels go Hollywood

Iconic buildings play important roles in some of Hollywood’s most memorable movies. Imagine King Kong without the Empire State Building, Rocky without the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s steps, or The Shining without the Timberline Lodge.

While slightly less dramatic, these three California hotels are great places to stay and just so happen to bring some Hollywood pedigree to their beautifully finished rooms and stellar amenities.

Pretty Woman — The Beverly Wilshire
Pretty Woman was Julia Roberts’ breakout role, one that sent her skyrocketing into the stratosphere of Hollywood actresses. Have your own champagne-and-strawberries carpet picnic, or sink into the tub in your room and lip-sync Prince’s Kiss.

Some Like it Hot — Hotel Del Coronado
Well, movie buffs, there’s no such thing as the Seminole Ritz resort in Miami, the setting of the 1959 Jack Lemmon/Tony Curtis/Marilyn Monroe vehicle Some Like it Hot. It was San Diego’s iconic Hotel del Coronado that stood in for the film, a building that has also appeared in Baywatch and My Blue Heaven. In fact, it is said L. Frank Baum wrote a little book called The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at the Hotel del Coronado.

The Rock — Fairmont San Francisco
As gripping thrillers go, there are few that can match Michael Bay’s 1996 film The Rock, starring Sean Connery, Nicolas Cage and Ed Harris. In that film, there’s a scene where a certain character (no spoilers!) is thrown off a balcony. That balcony was one of the Fairmont San Francisco’s.

There are plenty of other stories similar to these in hotels across California. Wherever you go, check with locals to see if there are any famous connections. Whether you want to eat, stay or shop like the stars, California is the place to recreate some of your favorite movie moments.
