Jane’s Walk 2016
Jane’s Walk is a festival of free, citizen-led walking tours inspired by legendary urbanist Jane Jacobs. The events take place in cities and towns around the world the first weekend of May. While the epicenters of Jane’s Walk are New York City (over 100 walks) and Toronto, chances are there are events scheduled in your hometown. Traveling? The walks are insider tours given by local experts and a great way to bypass the usual tourist experience. Check the Jane’s Walk website to search for walks near you.

From the website:
Jane Jacobs (1916-2006) was an urbanist and activist whose writings championed a fresh, community-based approach to city building. She had no formal training as a planner, and yet her 1961 treatise, The Death and Life of Great American Cities, introduced ground-breaking ideas about how cities function, evolve and fail that now seem like common sense to generations of architects, planners, politicians and activists. She lived in Greenwich Village for decades, then moved to Toronto in 1968 where she continued her work and writing on urbanism, economies and social issues until her death in April 2006
