More Than Just Parades – Memorial Day in NYC

Memorial Day typically marks the start of summer vacation season — when travelers start to get the itch to hop on a plane and do something fun in the sun.

This Memorial Day, consider creating a New York City getaway like no other. Yes, you still can do all the typical fun stuff — shopping, Broadway shows, sightseeing, etc. — but there are also plenty of chances for you to soak up the sun while taking in the Big Apple.

Reach the beach

When you think of the beach, New York City may not be the first spot to come to mind. But venture out beyond Manhattan and there are a surprising number of chances to soak up the sun on the sand.

Coney Island has three miles of beach that combines sand and a bustling boardwalk. On the other end of the spectrum, Jacob Riis Park Beach is a quiet, serene oasis of sand and unspoiled nature. In between are the Bronx’s Orchard Beach, the ever-popular Rockaway Beach, Staten Island’s Midland Beach and many more.

Sip cocktails on a rooftop bar

New York City may not have many street-side patios for people-watching over cocktails, but it does one thing better than almost any other city — rooftop patios.

Grab a drink over some quiet music or sip cocktails as the music carries you well into the night at one of the city’s diverse rooftop patios. In the Meatpacking District? Check out Plunge or Le Bain. Midtown? Hit 230 Fifth, Top of the Strand or Upstairs. Chelsea? Try Gallow Green. And there are plenty more where those came from.

Hit one of many parks

Central Park is one of the most iconic urban green spaces in the world. But there are plenty more parks to explore in and around New York City. Check out the view of Manhattan from the Brooklyn Bridge Park, walk the High Line on Manhattan’s West Side, relax in Hudson River Park, or trek through the lush flora of Riverside Park.
